Bon Secours Surgical Weight Loss

Education and Support

Bariatric Support Group 2018

Patient education is an integral part of each person’s treatment in the program. All patients are required to attend an information session hosted by the program staff and one of our surgeons. They will be able to answer your questions about weight loss surgery.

Informational Sessions

The information session is the first step in your weight loss journey and gives you an opportunity to find out if weight loss surgery is right for you. There is no cost for this lecture and you are under no obligation to move forward with surgery.

Informational sessions are held at both St. Mary’s Hospital and St. Francis Medical Center. Topics covered in the informational lecture include:

  • Background information on obesity
  • Causes, co-morbidities and criteria for surgery
  • Surgical treatments
  • Potential benefits
  • Possible risks and complications
  • Insurance information summary/questions and answers

If you would like to proceed with surgery we can schedule an appointment for an initial consultation with one of our providers.

Many health insurance plans cover weight loss surgery however plan coverage does vary. It is important to contact your insurance provider to determine if you have obesity benefits or if your policy will cover weight loss surgery.

Support

Ongoing support following bariatric surgery is essential for success in keeping the weight off.

We invite you to join us in our weight loss surgery support group. We offer support group meetings designed to assist you. The group offers education, support, and guidance.

During our meetings, you will have the opportunity to network with other members, share information and ideas, and learn how to have a healthier lifestyle. We provide nutrition education, information about taking care of your operation, problem solving, and coping strategies.

The group will be facilitated by professional staff and guest speakers which include Nurse Practitioners, Registered Dietitians, Registered Nurses, and Physicians with extensive experience in weight loss surgery.

The Maintenance Support Group and the Forever Thin Support Group recently combined. The combined support group, renamed “Change for Life” meets the 2nd Thursday of each month. There is no registration requirement to attend. It is open those thinking about gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy surgery, those who just had surgery, or those who are five years out from surgery. The group is appropriate for patients after adjustable gastric band surgery, gastric bypass, or sleeve gastrectomy. It is an opportunity to learn more from other members. Family members and friends are also welcome to attend this meeting.
We meet at St. Mary’s Hospital, Education Center, room 164, on the first floor, from 6:00 PM– 7:00 PM.

“A Healthier You” Support Group, which met at St. Francis Medical Center is no longer meeting until further notice.
