- Medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas
- Completed General Surgery Internship and Residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC
- Completed Advanced Laparoscopic/Bariatric Surgery Fellowship at Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia Hospitals
- Served 14 years in the United States Army as a physician to include tours in Iraq, Republic of Korea, Germany, Honduras, and as Chief of Laparoscopic & Bariatric Surgery at Walter Reed Army Medical Center
- Board certified in Surgery; member of the American College of Surgeons, American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, and Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons
